covers the common questions that occur while learning how to play.
ABOUT MONSTER CARDS
Face-up Defense Position
Q: When my monster in Defense Position is flipped face-up due to
an attack or card effect, is it then returned face-down?
A: No, once it is flipped face-up, it remains in face-up as long
as it is not destroyed. Normally, a Flip Effect Monster's effect is activated
only once when it is flipped face-up.
The change of Battle Position when a monster is Summoned or Set
Q: Can a monster be Set and then Flip Summoned in the same turn?
A: No. If you Summon or Set a monster, you cannot change the Battle
Position in the same turn that the monster is Summoned or Set.
Set of high level monsters
Q: Can I Set a Level 5 or higher monster so I can Flip Summon it
without offering a Tribute?
A: No, the Tribute must be offered when the high level monster
is first placed on the field, regardless of Battle Position.
When to Apply Flip Effects
Q: If my Flip Effect Monster is turned face-up due to my opponent's
attack but is destroyed, is the Flip Effect still applied?
A: Yes. The Flip Effect is applied before the card is destroyed.
Special Summon of high level monsters by "Monster Reborn"
Q: If I Special Summon a Level 5 or higher monster using "Monster
Reborn", do I have to offer a Tribute for the monster?
A: No. You can Special Summon a Level 5 or higher monster without
offering a Tribute using "Monster Reborn", even when it is discarded from
your hand to the Graveyard. However, you cannot use “Monster Reborn” to
Special Summon a Fusion Monster, Ritual Monster or some special monsters
like "Gate Guardian", etc. that were not initially Special Summoned in
the normal manner and sent to the Graveyard. However, if these monsters
were initially Special Summoned and destroyed in the normal way, you can
use “Monster Reborn” to Special Summon them from the Graveyard.
Discards/Monster Reborn
Q: If I discard a high level monster from my hand to the Graveyard
because of the 6-card hand limit or the effect of "Card Destruction",
etc., can I use "Monster Reborn" to Special Summon it?
A: Yes. You can Special Summon high level monsters in this manner.
However, you cannot use "Monster Reborn" to Special Summon a Fusion Monster,
a Ritual Monster or some special monsters like "Gate Guardian", etc. that
were not initially Special Summoned in the normal manner and sent to the
Graveyard.
ABOUT MAGIC & TRAP CARDS
Limit to Magic/Trap Cards?
Q: Like Monster Cards, am I limited to playing 1 Magic and/or 1
Trap Card per turn during my Main Phases?
A: No. You can play as many Magic and/or Trap Cards as you wish,
provided there are open spaces in the Magic & Trap Card Zone. However,
you have to Set a Trap Card before you activate it , and it can only be
activated after the beginning of your opponent's next turn.
Quick Play Magic Cards
Q: If you have 5 cards on the Magic & Trap Card Zone of the
field, can you play Quick-Play Magic Cards from your hand?
A: No. A Quick-Play Magic Card requires a space in the Magic &
Trap Card Zone to be played, just like other Magic & Trap Cards. The
only exception to this is a Field Magic Card. If you have space on the
Field Card Zone, you can activate or set a Field Magic Card even though
the Magic & Trap Card Zone is filled.
SPECIFIC CARDS RULINGS
Man-Eater Bug/Hane-Hane
Q: What if "Man-Eater Bug" or "Hane-Hane" is the only monster that
is on the field and it is flipped face-up?
A: “Man-Eater Bug” destroys itself if there is no other monster
to destroy. “Hane-Hane” returns itself to your hand if there is no other
monster to return.
Wall of Illusion
Q: What happens if "Wall of Illusion" is attacked when it is in
Attack Position, and wins? Is my opponent's monster sent to the Graveyard,
or returned to its owner's hand?
A: It gets destroyed and doesn't go back in the owner's hand.
Required Cards for Fusion
Q: Do you have to have all the required cards (Fusion-Material
Monsters and "Polymerization") in the Deck when you place Fusion Monster
Cards in your Fusion Deck?
A: No. You can put Fusion Monsters in your Fusion Deck even though
you do not have all the required cards for the Fusion. For example, you
can use an opponent's monster card as Fusion-Material Monster by activating
"Change of Heart" or "Monster Reborn".
Dark Hole & Raigeki
Q: If "Dark Hole" or "Raigeki" is activated and a monster is face-down,
is the monster affected?
A: Yes. All monsters are destroyed, regardless of Battle Position.
Swords of Revealing Light
Q: Does "Swords of Revealing Light"'s effect remain active even
if it is destroyed before the end of your opponent's third turn?
A: "Swords of Revealing Light" remains on the field and is active
until destroyed at the end of your opponent's third turn. However, if
your opponent uses "Heavy Storm" or another card with a similar effect,
OR "Swords of Revealing Light" is removed from the field before the end
of your opponent's third turn, your opponent may then attack during the
turn that follows the card's destruction.
Last Will
Q: What is the significance of "this card is active for one turn
only”?
A: This means that "Last Will" is destroyed after activation. However,
the effect remains during that turn. You can activate "Last Will" before
your monster is sent to the Graveyard. This card is useful against opponent's
Trap Cards such as "Mirror Force".
Change of Heart & Opponent's Flip Effect Monster
Q: If I take control of my opponent's Set Flip Effect Monster using
"Change of Heart", can I use its Flip Effect by Flip Summoning it?
A: Yes. You can use the Flip Effect Monster's effect by Flip Summoning
it in the turn that “Change of Heart” is activated. After the end of that
turn, it returns to your opponent's side of the field. However, since
it remains face-up, opponent ends up losing a chance to activate its Flip
Effect.
Ultimate Offering
Q: Can "Ultimate Offering" be activated during my opponent's turn?
If so, can I Normal Summon a monster in my opponent's turn?
A: Yes. However, you can Normal Summon or Set a monster only during
your opponent's Battle Phase if you use this effect in your opponent's
turn. Of course, you can also activate the effect in your turn, but only
in your Main Phase.
Waboku/Kuriboh
Q: What is the difference between the effects of "Waboku" and "Kuriboh"?
A: "Waboku" is a Trap Card that negates all damage from all your
opponent's monsters to your own, and also negates Direct Damage to your
Life Points during the turn it's activated. "Kuriboh" is a Multi-Trigger
Effect Monster that can negate damage from only 1 of your opponent's monster
to your Life Points. If you use "Kuriboh"'s effect when your monster takes
Attack Damage, the attacked monster is destroyed but you receive no Life
Points damage. Since "Kuriboh" is played from your hand, it is not affected
by such cards as "Heavy Storm" and "Lord of D.".
Specifically Designated Target
Q: What is an example of Magic Cards, Trap Cards, or other effect
cards that specifically designate a target?
A: Equip Magic Cards, "Change of Heart", "Two Pronged Attack",
and the effects of "Man-Eater Bug" and "Hane-Hane" are all examples of
cards that specifically designate a target. All these cards require that
a specific card be selected as the target of the effect. By contrast,
cards such as "Dark Hole", "Raigeki", "Trap Hole", "Fissure", "Mirror
Force" and Field Magic Cards are EXCLUDED. This is because their effects
are automatic, or affect the whole field.
Robbin' Goblin
Q: When my opponent has an active "Robbin' Goblin" on the field,
should I discard 1 card randomly from my hand if my opponent activates
the effect of "Cannon Soldier" or "Catapult Turtle?
A: No, the effect of "Robbin Goblin" is applied to Battle Damage
ONLY. Therefore, damage from an Effect Monster's effect are EXCLUDED.
